HIGHSPEED TRAIN - The SMILE

Description

The SMILE developed by Stadler, which is based on the successful FLIRT, is an eleven-car high-speed train. The first high-speed train to be built by Stadler was demonstrated at InnoTrans 2016 in Berlin, and clearly showed just how innovative the company is.

The SMILE has been developed with a clear focus on comfort and user-friendliness. The stepless entry makes travelling easier, especially for families with children, the elderly and those with restricted mobility. Platform heights of 550 mm and 760 mm can be served at the same level. This is a first for a serial high-speed multiple unit train. With the pressure-proof design of the car bodies and the advanced thermal and acoustic insulation, it sets new standards for long-distance rail transport.

The SMILE is certified to the high speed TSI and meets all the requirements for crashworthiness in accordance with EN 15227. The maximum speed is 250 km/h. High flexibility in the design of the interior, and maintenance-friendly components promise rail operators satisfied passengers and cost-efficient operation.

Stadler received its first order for 29 SMILE trains from SBB in October 2014. From December 2019, the electric high-speed trains will link Zurich to Milan via the Gotthard Base Tunnel and later Frankfurt to Milan.
