Platform Linear Drainage - Gdańsk Railway Station

Project

The railway station in Gdańsk (Poland) checks in over 10 million passengers annually.

The station is located in Śródmieście, and is part of an important communication hub for the city.

It’s also the largest railway station in Gdańsk and, thanks to its historic buildings, is one of the most beautiful railway stations in Poland.

In 2020, renovation work was undertaken to improve the comfort and safety of passengers. Platforms were raised, historic waiting rooms were renovated, and additional seats included for waiting passengers.

The entire renovation was carried out thoughtfully to preserve the character of the old station.

Requirement

Efficient linear drainage was required to provide effective drainage of long platforms and underpasses that had previously been flooded following torrential rain.

The client ‘Polish State Railways’ (Polskie Koleje Państwowe; PKP S.A.) expected a high-quality solution to complement the station design and ensure safety during operation.

Our Solution

FASERFIX KS fitted with FIBRETEC gratings was the selected surface drainage system, as this met both technical and design requirements.

FIBRETEC gratings had already gained recognition at other PKP facilities, due to their innovative and unique design (Focus Open International Design Award) and their suitability for use on platforms adjacent to electrified lines:

• None-conducting and anti-static for maximum safety (no earthing works required).
• Anti-Slip and HeelSafe slots for a safe surface environment
• Polyamide (PA-GF) composite for improved strength and durability.
• 100% corrosion free (no oxidation) to maintain a highly aesthetic appearance.
• Gratings firmly locked in place for maximum security (anti-theft).
• Available in a wide range of colours for total design flexibility.

Cast from ‘Fibre-Reinforced Concrete’ (with natural Basalt fibres for additional high-performance and sustainability), FASERFIX KS is a strong and durable ‘general-purpose’ channel system designed for use in a variety of applications (usually C 250 – E 600; EN 1433).
FASERFIX KS has thicker sidewalls (30mm) compared with alternatives.

A metal edge-frame (galvanised or stainless steel CNS 1.4301) cast deep within the channel body achieves a rigid and discreet edge-detail for extra strength and enhanced aesthetics at the surface.

Gratings are fixed into position with a 10-point locking system (SIDELOCK plus central bolt and bar arrangement) for added safety, stability and security.

Comprehensive Support

All stages of the design and construction process were fully supported by Rafał Rychert (Area Sales Manager; HAURATON Poland), including on site training. Channels required drilling and cutting in places to ensure a precise installation.
