Milestone reached on construction of Bamford loop for Hope Valley Railway Upgrade
Progress is continuing on the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade, as the VolkerRailStory joint venture undertakes essential improvements to the line between Manchester and Sheffield.
Recent line closures have seen major work completed, with key milestones achieved by the project team, including a bridge extension in Bamford to facilitate the new passing loop between Bamford and Hathersage stations.
During a 28 hour closure of the railway line in November, the 11m span bridge deck was installed by the team, overcoming the challenges that arose by working near an oil pipeline.
Two Kirow 1200 cranes installed the bridge, weighing 58 tonnes, and a total of 172m3 of concrete was used for the base structure.
Recent months have also seen improvements undertaken elsewhere along the route. The lift shafts for the new, accessible footbridge, have been constructed at Dore & Totley station, and track upgrade work has been carried out along the line near Stockport.
