Turner & Townsend lands Lower Thames Crossing role

National Highways has chosen Turner & Townsend for the £23.3m commercial partner contract on the Lower Thames crossing.

For the next eight years, T&T will take responsibility for commercial and contract management on the £6.8bn Lower Thames Crossing, which will connect Essex and Kent with new roads and a tunnel below river Thames.

As commercial partner, it will also carry out an independent cost assurance and cost audit function across the main works contracts. It will also support National Highways, working with the integration partner Jacobs, and the technical partner, a joint venture between COWI and Arcadis and Jacobs.

Turner & Townsend managing director for infrastructure David Whysall said the project had huge potential for the construction industry as well. “Through a collaborative delivery model, it has the opportunity to be an exemplar in driving programme performance and changing the industry’s approach to net-zero,” he said.

Last month, National Highways announced that Balfour Beatty and Kier Eiffage were on the shortlist to build the new roads north of the river. BFV JV, Costain, Kier Eiffage and Skanska are in the running to win the Kent roads job.

Three JVs have also been shortlisted for the £2.3bn tunnelling contract.
