Broken-down train causes Manchester Piccadilly disruption

Passengers in the North West are being warned of major delays after a train broke down outside Manchester Piccadilly station.

A Northern service from Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly came to a stop at around 8.30am today (Friday 26 November).

This blocked a key junction for around 90 minutes, stopping other trains from arriving or departing from the North West’s biggest railway station.

The broken down train has now been recovered but Network Rail is warning the issue will cause knock-on delays for train service over the next several hours.

Northern tickets are being accepted by a number of other train operators and on Manchester’s Metrolink*.

People planning to travel today are urged to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest travel information.

Chris Pye, Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director, said: “We’re sorry to passengers delayed by a broken-down train outside Manchester Piccadilly station this morning. It blocked a key junction into the North West’s busiest railway station for around 90 minutes. Our engineers have now moved the train but the fault continues to cause knock-on delays across the region. We thank people for their patience and advise anyone planning to travel today to check National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information.”
